Biome Study
The children chose a biome they were interested in learning more about. Through research, both from books and on line, they discovered much about their biome. In particular, they learned about the plants and animals that call their biome home. From all this knowledge, they then created a thumbnail sketch of their biome that incorporated at least three plants of different sizes and one animal that lives there. Sketching the foreground, mid-ground and background, and adding their plants and animal was the next challenge. With that accomplished, they were then given a canvas to sketch their landscape onto. Outlining with permanent marker made the artwork jump right off the canvas. Finally, the children used the paint markers from the Crayola grant to paint their biomes. While they were working on these works of art with Mrs. Rancourt in art, we were continuing our research and writing poems on our biomes. The final project will be a complete integrated arts activity where the children will create a finger puppet of an animal in their biome that will read the poem they wrote while in front of their painting to their peers. Very cool!
Ellis Island Day 2-23-17 was amazing!
G-Squared Gardens came to help us plant our Caracas Carrots and Sugar Ann Snap Peas. Wonder how long they will take to germinate?
G Squared Gardens visited us today! The children used seed catalogues to determine which of the types of plants, from the list they created before, will grow during our spring growing season. They then made a large list on the board of all the plants that would fit this rule. Finally, each student chose their top two choices on a secret ballot and passed them into our Scientists in Residence. The votes were tallied and the seeds we will be planting in the spring are...carrots and sugar snap peas!
Heirloom Shares
The children are learning about their family's history and then presenting very remarkable heirlooms to the class. They are then typing their stories up to publish for others to read.
